Early in my mission, Beck explained to me that, despite all the people who were trading U2 and Clash tapes, the only approved music for the mission was church-oriented music (Saturday’s Warrior and the MoTab) and Bolivian folklore music.
A couple of weeks in, I bought a Walkman and some headphones and, on Beck’s recommendation, picked up a couple of tapes from Los Kjarkas and Savia Andina, the two biggest folklore groups in the country.
Even if we had been able to find church-related music, I wasn’t interested. But the folklore stuff was amazing. What they could do with relatively primitive instruments bordered on the miraculous.
Bolivian music always had undertones of misery and death. “Love” songs tended to be about lost love, but most of the songs were about the despair and poverty of the country. The most upbeat of them came across as prayers for a better world that was nowhere to be seen. One famous song by Los Kjarkas was remade (without permission, I might add) into the Brazilian dance hit “La Lambada.”
But the original was all about loneliness and rejection: “Llorando se fue, y me dejo sin su amor” (She went away weeping and left me alone without her love). Perhaps the most well-known song from Bolivia/Peru is “El Condor Pasa,” which Simon and Garfunkel redid, much to the outrage of Bolivian musical purists.
Most missionaries at least tolerated the folklore music, but there was a lot of trading going on.
One elder, a former Marine, had an enormous suitcase full of cassettes that he would copy at a nominal charge. You could get the folklore music in any corner tienda, so there wasn’t much of it traded.
Beck’s replacement was to be Elder Saavedra, who lived just across the runway from us in R;o Seco. His companion, Elder Charlton, was going home to California, and Beck was headed to Sucre, so our areas would be combined.
We quickly determined that Beck and I had the better apartment, whereas Charlton and Saavedra had better furniture (and a propane stove).
So, we would live in our apartment and use their furniture, and our old beds would replace the hermanas’ hay bales.
Going with Beck to the train station was hard for me. He was the only companion I had known, and he was a good friend. After dropping him off, I took a taxi to the zone leaders’ house, where I met Elder Saavedra. For whatever reason, nobody called him Elder; he was Edgar to everyone. he was from Cochabamba, with a cheerful smile and a tear-shaped birthmark below his right eye.
He never got discouraged but was always trying to keep my spirits up; and because he was so genuine, you couldn’t get annoyed at the cheerfulness.
We hired a pickup to go over to R;o Seco and pick up the furniture and his things.
He had several traditional musical instruments wrapped carefully in hand-woven blankets.
Before his mission, he had been in an all-Mormon folklore group, Grupo Cumorah. He taught me how to play a few very basic tunes on the quena and zamponia, and on P-day I bought my own in the city. Some nights he would play for me, and I was amazed at his talent. I could never hope to do anything like that.
It was very strange speaking in Spanish all the time. Even though Beck had encouraged me to use Spanish as much as possible, we generally spoke English in private.
But not with Edgar. He spoke no English, and even with three months in Bolivia, my Spanish was not all that good. But he was patient with me and really tried to help me speak better Spanish.
A couple of days later was June 23, “Noche de San Juan,” the traditional evening before the Feast of St. John the Baptist. People said it was the coldest night of the year and everyone would be out in the streets lighting bonfires and fireworks.
The zone decided to have a bonfire and party over at the welfare Hermanas house. Edgar and I worked a normal day then took a bus to Ciudad Satellite for the party. When we got to La Ceja, we could see the fires burning all over the city, the air so thick with smoke it hurt to breathe.
Most of the missionaries were already at the house when we got there. Hermana Thomas was making an enormous cauldron of hot cocoa, while Hermana Bryant made pancakes.
Elder Ford, our zone leader, was stirring a small pot of maple syrup. We couldn’t get pancake syrup in Bolivia, so a lot of the missionaries would have their families send down a bottle of maple extract, which we would boil with sugar and water to make a runny but serviceable syrup.
After dinner, we went outside to set up the bonfire. We had some wood scraps and cardboard, but the main event was to be the burning of the hermanas hay bales.
“I’ve been sleeping on these for months, and I can’t think of a better way to get rid of them,” said Hermana Thomas. When the fire was roaring, a couple of elders went in the house to get the bales. Just as they were going to throw mattresses onto the fire, the neighbor across the street started yelling.
“Wait! What are you doing? Those are perfectly good mattresses, and you’re going to burn them?” They said they had some bales that were in much worse shape, and they would trade them to us; we could burn theirs.
So, we hauled the bales across the street and brought back ones that were, indeed, much more threadbare, and dirtier.
We heaved the first bale onto the fire, and as it began to catch flame, scores of bedbugs crawled out from between the burning seams.
“I hate to think what was living in my bed,” said Hermana Thomas.
That night we stayed with Lamont and his companion, Elder Mamani, the four of us crammed sideways into two twin beds. At church we saw that Hermana Moreno’s six-year-old son had badly burned his hand falling into the family’s bonfire the night before.
All that week I started feeling weaker and sicker every day. Wednesday’s journal entry: “Today sucked. We had an argument with a blind man in the morning. Our afternoon cites fell through. I had diarrhea, and nobody wanted to hear our message.”
The next day, Hermana Moreno, who had noticed that I wasn’t well, made all my Favorite foods: a chicken milanesa, beet salad, Jell-O, and carrot tea. I was so sick I couldn’t eat much, and as soon as I finished, I walked across the street to a field and threw everything up.
She called me back into the house and made me lie down on the couch. I honestly don’t remember feeling that ill in my entire life, before or after.
She sent her son Tony to the store to buy two coca leaves and a eucalyptus leaf. She put them in water to boil and then caramelized a teaspoon of sugar over the kerosene burner.
When the tea was boiling, she stirred in the caramel and made me drink it. Within a half an hour, I was feeling well enough to go home.
The next day I was still sick, but we got word that I was being transferred, after two weeks with Edgar. I was going to 16 de Julio, one of the worst areas in the zone for living conditions.
Worse yet, I was going to be with Elder Brock, who had the reputation of being the biggest “fry” in the mission. With just one month to go in his mission, Brock had just been put with a greenie from Potosi, and he had immediately started complaining to the mission president that he resented having to pay for his companion’s living expenses.
The Bolivians received an allowance from the church, but it was not nearly enough to make ends meet.
We had been told to have $220 a month for expenses, but the Bolivians were given only $50-$90 a month, depending on the exchange rate. Having a Bolivian companion meant that you shared.
Brock wanted to buy souvenirs to take home, and he was angry that his souvenir money was paying for Elder Mamani’s food. So the mission president had relented and transferred me so that Brock could buy his souvenirs.
Sick and demoralized, I moved over to the new area with Brock.
When we got to the apartment, he got out his charango and played a tuneless song.
Somehow, he wasn’t in the same league as Edgar.
